I-25
reconstruction project
Things to Know
what is going on?
A monumental I-25 reconstruction project in the northeast part of the city is now officially underway, and it’s set to transform the area.
Crews are rolling out plans to completely rebuild both the Montgomery and Comanche interchanges, along with a major expansion of I-25.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is calling this their second-largest project since the iconic Big-I overhaul.
The reason? To boost capacity for the 100,000+ drivers who navigate this interchange daily.
what is changing?
First off, say goodbye to the loop that takes drivers from Montgomery to I-25—it’s disappearing.
From now on, drivers on westbound Montgomery will need to make a left turn at the light to access I-25.
The project will also add extra lanes to both the on and off ramps, enabling drivers to swing around to the other side of the highway without stopping at a light.
In addition to the new interchanges, NMDOT is set to add an extra southbound lane on I-25, widen the Frontage roads, and install new bike lanes on both Montgomery and Comanche.
Officials acknowledge that there will be lane closures and other disruptions during this project, but they are committed to minimizing traffic headaches as much as possible.
how will this affect me?
With crews breaking ground on a project slated to last three years, you can expect some disruptions.
While the construction might be a bit of a headache, NMDOT representatives are asking drivers to keep the long-term benefits in mind.
